Using a strong laser to cut and/or engrave objects from flat sheets of material, such as plastic, wood, and many other materials, is known as laser cutting.

 

You can create items like rubber stamps, signage, jewelry, prototype pieces, and mass production jobs using the laser cutting technique. The laser cutter operates by carefully aiming a powerful laser beam at the material of choice to either etc.,  mark, or cut through.

The material is burned away by the laser beam during cutting, leaving you with the cutout shape you've defined in your vector file. Because the cutting beam is so precise and narrow (usually around 0.1mm), it produces exceedingly fine slices. You can mark the target by lowering the beam power.

Reducing the beam power allows you to etch or engrave the material's surface, which can produce some amazing effects on materials like wood and plastic.
